Transgenic tools for studying the nervous system in Nematostella vectensis

Cnidarians (nessledyr) lack a centralized nervous system but they are able to produce large numbers of neurons throughout their life and in all tissues. How these neurons find other cells to which they connect, is not known. To understand this process better, we have generated transgenic sea anemones in which actin filaments, microtubules or the endoplasmic reticulum of neurons are labeled by fluorescent proteins. In this project we aim to characterize these transgenic animals in more detail.

Tasks

You are involved in inducing spawning (gamete production) of the genetically modified sea anemones, and in the identification and characterization of animals carrying the genetic modifications by fluorescence microscopy.

Starting date/period: June 2026

The project involves: Handling of adult animals and embryos, testing conditions for fluorescence microscopy of live animals.

Experience

Erfaring med de virkelige opp- og nedturene ved å håndtere feltforsøk

Experience in real-life ups and downs of managing field experiments

Involvement: 40 hours
